Foundations of Mathematics 11
Course Syllabus
Welcome to Foundations of Math 11
This course is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills required for entry into most post-secondary studies in programs that do not require the study of theoretical calculus. Foundations of Math 11 builds upon many of the topics covered in Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 10 and this course will be a a prerequisite for the Foundations of Math 12.
Prerequisite: Foundations and Pre-Calculus Math 10
Prerequisite: Foundations and Pre-Calculus Math 10
Who Is This Course For?
This course is intended for students who plan to take a College or University program that does not require Calculus (i.e. Arts, Humanities)

Assessment & Evaluation
For this course you will be assessed through a variety of mediums looking for variety of skills and ability including but not limited to: mathematical reasoning, computational fluency, problem solving, mathematical representation and application. Everything you do, create, write, say is all evidence of your learning and is continually collected. These competencies and others will be evaluated according to the following 5-point mastery scale. (*Adapted from the BC Ministry of Education)
This grading policy assumes that everyone learns at different speeds and what is most important is that learning is happens, not how quickly it happens. Students will be given grades solely based on their mastery of a specific learning standard. In other words, you only get graded for demonstrating what you know. Students at any time can ask to have a learning standard re-assessed once they become more competent and fluent.
Competencies to be Assessed:
Accessing Grades
Student marks will be tracked using MyEducationBC, which has a Student Portal to view updated marks at any time during the semester. The website portal can be accessed by clicking here MyEducationBC. Students (and Parents) can login using their student number and the student’s selected password. If a student has never accessed the portal and needs help with this, I’m glad to help. Also, if a parent (or student) wants to know their updated mark and can’t access the portal, they can send me an email and I can send back a PDF of their updated progress report.
Homework
You will be given some course work to complete every class as well as be given sufficient class time to complete the assigned work if you make good use of your time. If you do not complete the assigned work during class time it will become your homework and your responsibility to compete. It is your job to complete all of the homework assigned before the next period. Make sure you ASK QUESTIONS next period if you have difficulties completing the homework. Do not allow yourself to fall behind as we do something new each class.
Assignments
Regular assignment will be given and you are encouraged to complete them to the best of your ability. Make good use of the class time given for assignment completion. The daily assignments are suggested practice questions, and it is up to each student to determine how many of these questions to do to fully grasp the concepts. The quizzes and unit tests will be strongly based on the suggested practice problems.
Quizzes*, Tests* & Exams*
Please note that for these assessments, only calculators will be permitted. Other devices such as: cell phones, tablets, computers, etc... are not permitted. Graphing Calculators are permitted and is strongly encouraged for any student looking at pursuing a career in the Sciences or Mathematics, otherwise a standard scientific calculator is required.
*Students who miss these assessments will have until they are marked and handed back to complete. This is to ensure timely feedback can be given to those in attendance.
Re-Test & Corrections
I feel it is very important that we learn from our mistakes as part of learning...after all failure is the greatest teacher! As a result students will have the opportunity to do re-writes and corrections for partial marks (50% bonus on all corrected work...example student got 12 out of 20 and did all corrections will receive a bonus of 4 marks or 50% of 8 to earn a grade of 16 out of 20) if they are in "good standing" with the relevant work leading up to the event. What is Good Standing? Good standing is when a student has shown and taken a genuine effort and initiative to complete all their course work leading up to a quiz or test.
Competencies to be Assessed:
- Computational Fluency (CF): your ability to efficiently and accurately calculate answers to problems.
- Mathematical Reasoning (MR): your ability to use mathematical principals to systematically work through (i.e. Think Critically) and solve problems.
- Communicating & Representing (CR): your ability to justify and convey your thinking in a logical and effective manner.
- Applying (A): your ability to use and apply mathematical knowledge to a wide variety of situations to make justified and logical decisions.

- Does Not Qualify: A student did not complete the majority of the assigned course work, missed class, incomplete course notes, poor participation, etc...this would not qualify a student for corrections or a re-write.
- Does Qualify: A student who completed the majority of assigned course work (missing a few questions is fine), attends class regularly, takes notes in class, participates etc... this student would qualify for corrections or a re-write.
- Note: students who receive a failing grade (<50%) will only qualify for a re-write (i.e. no corrections).
Extra-Help
It is very important to keep up in Math. Most students find it necessary to seek additional assistance at some point in the school year. If you are struggling with a concept, I encourage you to come see me ASAP. The longer you wait, the harder it will be. Don’t fall behind! I have an open door policy...my door is always open to helping students. I believe helping students in need is not extra curricular, but an essential part of the learning process. While I cannot be available 24/7, I do hope that the use of this website and its resources will provide students with access to information when needed whether it be by myself or one of their fellow classmates. |

Attendance
Showing up to class is an integral part of having success in school and streamlines the learning process. If a student is absent for a class, it is their responsibility to obtain and complete any assigned material missed that day. If you are absent take the following actions:
SPECIAL NOTE ON ATTENDANCE: While it is understandable that students will get sick through the year, have family emergencies and have appointments to attend, the original classroom experience can never be 100% duplicated. I will always do my best to help students catch up on the material that has been missed, but it is the student’s responsibility to follow up with either myself and/or their classmates for any missing work.
- Check the website or contact a classmate to see what you missed in class and what was assigned.
- Print the material (if applicable)
- Read the notes as well as any supplement material (i.e. chapter in textbook, eResources, etc...).
- Complete the assignment and check your answers.
- See or contact Mr. Ostoforov if you need help or have specific questions.
